Picking a lid for paper cups should be simple, but it rarely is. One type works fine with iced coffee and turns soft with hot drinks. Another looks natural but hides the beverage. A third feels sturdy yet doesn’t match the cup rim. Most of the decision comes down to three materials you’ll see again and again: PLA, CPLA, and Bagasse.

Here’s a practical breakdown based on how they actually perform in cafés and takeaway operations.

PLA lids

PLA comes from plant sources such as corn starch. It stays clear, so customers can see the drink inside. That makes it a natural choice for iced coffee, cold brew, smoothies, and juice. The fit is usually clean and familiar.
The drawback shows up with heat. Standard PLA softens when the liquid is too hot, which is why it’s not the first pick for freshly poured coffee or tea.

CPLA lids

CPLA is PLA that has been further processed to raise its heat resistance. It handles hot drinks better than regular PLA and still offers a consistent snap-on fit. Most versions are opaque rather than transparent.
Coffee shops that want a plant-based lid for hot service often land on CPLA because it balances performance and compostability claims.

Bagasse lids

Bagasse is made from sugarcane fiber left after the juice is extracted. These lids have a matte, natural look and a slightly textured surface. They pair especially well with kraft or unbleached paper cups and give a clear “fiber-based” signal to customers.

They manage heat reasonably well. The trade-off is visibility, you won’t see the drink through them.

Q: Do double wall cups need special lids?

A: No. Double wall cups use the same rim standards as single wall cups in most cases. An 80mm or 90mm lid that fits your single wall cups will generally fit the double wall version of the same size. The extra wall affects insulation, not the lid diameter.
